The Canadian Medical Discoveries Funds
(CMDF and CMDF II) GrowthWorks Canadian Fund
The Canadian Medical Discoveries Funds are labour
sponsored venture capital funds that invest exclusively in
eligible Canadian businesses engaged in the health sciences
sector. Established in 1994, CMDF is Canada’s first and
largest health sciences LSIF, with approximately $300 million
in managed assets and investments in over 50 companies. CMDF
invests in businesses in all stages of development – from
start-up through commercialization and expansion. The companion
fund, CMDF II, was established in 2002 and emphasizes investments
in the later stages of development. CMDF was recently acquired by GrowthWorks Canadian Fund, which is a national retail venture capital fund (RVC). Incorporated in 1990 the Fund has approximately $400 million in assets and over 100,000 individual shareholders. The Fund is an RRSP eligible investment available for purchase through Investment Advisors and discount brokerages, by residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavu.
